I have to admit that some of my favorite sessions are the ones that are unscripted and un-posed. As I’ve honed my craft, I’ve really moved more and more towards lifestyle portraiture and documentary style portrait photography. There is something rare and special about hanging back and watching people bounce off each other. This was one of those sessions. Silvia is a rare unicorn in the mothering world. In fact she is that mom who actually lets her kids run around in circles and play in the dirt during a photo session. Both of her kids went straight for the mud, really, like within seconds and I’ll admit, even knowing her prior to this day, I was holding my breath. She didn’t say anything. She let them play and I stood back and photographed her helping them make mud pies and wash their hands. We can’t all be like her, and that’s okay, but it was such a nice reminder to me, as a mom.Let them laugh and play and goof off and perhaps, listen just a little less than we would like. Let them be little.
